Choosing the Best Stone

Each stone is unique – we’ll be with you every step of the way to make sure you make the best decision possible!

Granite is one of the oldest, durable, and respected building materials. It is suitable for either exterior or interior use. Granite can provide your space with an unmatched luxury and elegance.

  • Contains three main minerals: Quartz, Alkali Feldspar, Plagioclase Feldspar
  • Colours include: white, pink, light grey
  • Also may contain: dark brown, dark green, or black minerals
  • Typically the hardest of the dimensional stones and weathers elements well
  • Best for kitchen countertops
  • Scratch, stain, heat resistant
  • Suitable for flooring, paving, wall cladding, and other types of countertops
  • Hundreds of colours to choose from

Slate is another very old building product. Its usual applications are flooring and roofing but may also be used for countertops. Slate is extremely long lasting and weathers the elements well.

  • Contains mostly grains of Mica and Quartz with small amounts of chlorite, hematite, and other minerals
  • Most slate is grey to black but may be red or purple depending on mineral content
  • Waterproof and long-lasting
  • Cost effective because it will not need to be replaced often
  • Modern look
  • Best for a busy household (little wear and tear)

Limestone is a unique building material because of its ability to be easily carved and shaped. It makes an excellent building stone used for flooring, wall cladding, vanity tops, furniture, or ornate stonework.

  • Made up of mostly calcite (mineral form of calcium carbonate)
  • Most limestone is grey but all colours have been found
  • Versatile
  • Cost effective
  • Strong and dense with few pores
  • Lower installation costs

Most sandstone is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications but is generally used as flooring or paving materials. Sandstone was once widely used for building houses.

  • Minerals that cement the grains include Quartz, Pyrite, Calcite
  • Colours range from cream, grey, red, brown, green depending on cements and impurities of sand
  • Dense and durable
  • Withstand freeze/thaw cycles
  • Does not alter in density or hardness over time
  • Not slippery when wet
  • No sealers needed
  • Cost effective

Marble is one of the most sought after building materials because of its beauty, strength and resilience to fire and erosion. Marble has multiple applications ranging from buildings to monuments to sculptures.

  • Essentially metamorphosed limestone and typically used for the same applications
  • Far more aesthetically valuable than limestone and available in many more colours
  • Can be used for flooring, columns, wall cladding, roofing
  • Elegant and luxurious appearance
  • Durable and long lasting

Quartzite is a durable stone primarily used for interior and exterior floors. It is a firm and compact stone with a harder body than marble.

  • Blend of light and dark grey with silver flecks of Quartz providing a sparkle
  • Used for flooring, wall-cladding, roofing and other interior and exterior applications
  • Will not fade over time

Travertine is limestone that has been formed over a long period of time. It is a porous material with many holes. These holes can either be filled with matching cement, epoxy, or resins, or left unfilled providing a more rustic look.

  • Ranges between ivory to golden brown in colour
  • Normally used for flooring, wall-cladding, vanity tops, fireplace surround, furniture
  • Unique look
  • New look can add value to home
  • Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms
